Singer Duffy revealed in a poignant Instagram post the reason for her singing hiatus: She was “rapped, drugged and held captive.”

In the post, Duffy said she revealed her story to a journalist over the summer and plans to speak more candidly about her experience in a spoken interview set to be released soon.

“The recovery took time,” Duffy said in the post. “There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

Duffy rose to international prominence after the release of her 2008 album, Rockferry, in which she garnered numerous awards, including a Grammy for best pop vocal album, according to Wales Online.

BuzzFeed News reports the singer took a hiatus in 2011 after the release of her second studio album, Endlessly. Since then, the singer has kept a low key presence, prompting some to ask, “Whatever happened to Duffy?”

Speculation occurred online for years as to why the singer stopped performing, with some guessing her disappearance from music was due to “plain old overexposure.”

Fans responded online in shock to Duffy’s Instagram revelation.

Duffy called on her followers to respect her family’s privacy at this time and requested them to make telling her story “a positive experience.”
