President Donald Trump told RNC donors at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend that Secret Service agents were “in blackface,” in an apparent attempt to joke about the outrage surrounding Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, according to a new report.

Sources at the speech told Axios that Trump made the remarks when he was describing his time in the White House around Christmas. The president reportedly said he saw the Secret Service agents wearing night vision goggles and then said: “They’re in blackface… they have to take them away.”

The news outlet said the sources believed the remarks were in reference to Northam, the Virginia governor who has faced condemnation after a racist yearbook photo of him in blackface surfaced.

Northam apologized for the photo, then denied that it wasn’t him in the photo, while admitting that he wore blackface in 1984 when he went to a Michael Jackson tribute party.

Those attending the speech had to put their cellphones in magnetized pouches to try and prevent leaks, according to the report.
