Residents in a Syrian town that was targeted by a deadly chemical weapons attack earlier this week have stated that warplanes returned to bomb it on Saturday.
Tuesday’s chemical attack left at least 86 people dead in the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun, leading to United States intervention early Friday. The U.S. dropped 59 cruise missiles on a Syrian air base in the first direct attack on the Bashar al-Assad regime since the civil war began in 2011.
According to eyewitnesses, Saturday’s airstrikes resulted in the death of a woman and several wounded. As of now, it remains unclear who led the strikes. But the Syrian military air force resumed flight operations at the base the U.S. hit within 24 hours according to reports by monitoring groups, wrote the Washington Post.
Despite international agreement that Tuesday’s launched chemical attacks were carried out by the Assad-led government, Russia and Iran have defended their mutual ally. President Donald Trump’s decision to target and attack the Syrian airfield leave country and government relations in an ambiguous state.
On Thursday, Russia also suspended a pact with the U.S. that prevents direct conflicts in the skies over Syria.
According to the Post, the Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons said on Thursday that it reached out to the Syrian government and that it was investigating the attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun.
