What happens when you throw an iPhone into a vat of molten aluminum? Leave it to our YouTube friend the Backyard Scientist to find out. The eccentric online personality has been destroying things in his backyard for years now. He partnered with Brandon Baldwin from the YouTube channel Gizmo Slip this time around to burn through an iPhone Terminator 2-style.”

Protected only by a face shield, the Backyard Scientist begins stirring $15 worth of molten aluminum in a giant vat. A slow-motion video shows the incredible reaction that occurs just moments after the iPhone touches the bright orange liquid. The mini-explosion most likely came from the phone’s lithium-ion battery, a component we’ve heard enough about this year.

The Backyard Scientist discovers that one side has been charred black, while the other formed a brilliant shiny coating. Finally, the iPhone starts to break down, leaving us images that will keep any Apple-lover awake at night.

The two YouTubers compare the experiment to the final, heartbreaking scene in the second Terminator film.
