In 2000, The Simpsons boldly predicted a future in which Donald Trump was president. In last night’s episode, the show took no pleasure in being right. In the opening credits, Bart scribbles on the chalk board, “BEING RIGHT SUCKS,” and just in case there was any confusion what he was referring to, the show’s official Twitter account clarified matters.

In the 2000 episode “Bart to the Future,” Lisa Simpson struggles to clean up the mess left behind by a Trump administration. Dan Greaney, the show’s writer, said he used Trump as “a warning to America.” He told the Hollywood Reporter, “[T]hat just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”
