Convenience store 7-Eleven is giving away free Slurpees. Twitter users noticed, causing the word “Slurpee” to become a top trend today.

The icy drinks will be free while supplies last, of course. But why would the convenience store everyone loves for cheap beer and midnight munchies be doling out Slurpees on this particular day in July?

Just check the calendar: Today is 7/11.

It’s a cheap publicity stunt that’s apparently working wonders. Aside from news stories, people really do seem to be excited about this momentous occasion.

Most tweets simply parroted the news: “free slurpees at 7/11″ was a typical tweet. Short, informative, to the point. And easy enough to tweet with one hand while holding a cup of sugar slush with the other.

Not everybody was so grateful. Some complained about the small size of their freebie. @StefBurt schooled them: “people stop complaining about how small your free slurpees are,” she tweeted. “they’re 7.11 oz. & they are free. ya greedy mutts.”

Alas, apparently the publicity stunt was working so well that some 7-Elevens ran out, according to the Twittosphere.

“711 ran out of cups, no free slurpees,” tweeted maryzelmanski. She added the hashtag of “#fuckthat” in case anyone didn’t know how she felt about her disappointment.

Perhaps she should direct her rage at the Slurpee-guzzling likes of @AlexWorkman, who tweeted:  “4 Slurpees at 4 locations in 50 minutes= awesomeness!”
