What’s green and dank and contains the potential for apocalyptic destruction of civilization as we know it?
Nukes hidden in bales of marijuana, of course.
This is not just a bad joke, according to Rep. Trend Franks (R-Ariz.), who on Wednesday warned of a threat to the United States that hits all the outrage buttons.
“We sometimes used to make the point that if someone wanted to smuggle a dangerous weapon into America, even a nuclear weapon, how would they do it?” Franks told CNN. “The suggestion is, maybe we’ll hide it in a bale of marijuana. There are national security implications here for a porous border.”
“As a group of nations, we need to understand that America is the world’s flagship of freedom. If we don’t have a secure border, that hurts everyone in the long run.”
Franks isn’t just freestyling on an open mic here. As the Washington Post points out, the idea that marijuana might be used to conceal nuclear weapons has been floating in the ether for decades.
Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman of California packed this idea into speech in 2007, while David Kay of the International Atomic Energy Agency told Frontline in 1996 that concealing a nuclear weapon in a bale of weed would be his “preferred method” of nuke smuggling.
“I’ve often said, my preferred method for delivering a nuclear device is, I would hide it in a bale of marijuana, contract it out to the drug lords and move it,” Kay said. “Marijuana is a good shielder actually for radiation. The drug lords have a superb record for delivery. They’re not Fed Ex, but they’re awfully close to it. And contract it out and get it across the border.”
So, if you weren’t already worried about a terrorist with a nuke or drug use, now you can at least worry about them at the same time.
