The likelihood of coming snout-to-snout with a shark is slim, but when you’re a professional surfer like Mick Fanning, it’s certainly an occupational hazard. In the midst of a competition on Saturday, Fanning found himself in this terrifying situation.

Fanning was competing in the J-Bay Open in South Africa when a shark sauntered by and knocked him off his board. The announcer on the competition broadcast said it best: “Holy shit.”

“I was just sitting there and I felt something just get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking trying to get it away,” Fanning told Australia’s Sky News. “I just saw fins. I was waiting for the teeth.”

Luckily, he made it out of the close encounter unscathed. But the video is enough to make you avoid the ocean forever. As one wise woman once said, “The ocean is the shark’s house.”
