Teens and 20-somethings preparing to enter the workforce find themselves facing arguably the most precarious job market in history. College degrees no longer guarantee jobs, and traditional 9-to-5 gigs are becoming a thing of the past. Of course, this is hardly news to members of the creative community, who have struggled to monetize their endeavors for basically as long as the arts have existed. Still, the generational gap can make it difficult for adults to grasp why millennials would choose such an unconventional career path as “professional YouTuber.”
If you want evidence of this generational gap, look no further than aspiring YouTube star Ben Wonder, who recently informed his father of his plans to devote all his time and energy to his channel. Wonder’s dad reacted predictably, telling his son, “You should forget about this YouTube stuff and get yourself a real job.”
Hold it right there, Mr. Wonder! Little does the skeptical Aussie dad know that his son recorded their exchange, laid a sick beat over the conversation, and is now cashing in on his old man’s incredulousness. (Or maybe he does know, and maybe the whole conversation was scripted, but whatever, let me live.) Wonder’s video, titled “My dad has never been more disappointed in me,” has racked up 155,000 views in two days, which slightly softens the blow of having your father trash your dream job and call you lazy.

Will this video propel Wonder to YouTube stardom? It’s too early to tell. But the dude does have 20,000 subscribers—not bad for only uploading four videos. If Wonder can start posting more frequently, then he might have a nice little career for himself. Who knows, maybe he’ll even score that date with Asa Akira.
