For Hamilton fans who have yet to shell out the dough for tickets, the documentary offers the most immersive experience of the musical yet. The film is directed by Alex Horowitz and includes interviews with the likes of President Barack Obama, Jimmy Fallon, Questlove, Nas, and Stephen Sondheim.

We’ll see Hamilton creator Lin Manuel-Miranda perform an early version of what would later become the full-length show at the White House in 2009. The documentary also digs into how Hamilton stars such as Leslie Odom, Jr. and Tony-nominated Christopher Jackson researched the historical context behind their roles.

Hamilton’s America debuted at the New York Film Festival over the weekend. Initial reviews are positive.

The Hollywood Reporter writes

“Beyond that, director Alex Horwitz’s densely packed 90-minute close-up digs deep into the ways in which the musical has rescued its subject, Alexander Hamilton, from relative obscurity, reaffirming his legacy as the principal architect of the American economic model that remains in place today. Using sharp graphic animations that draw on period etchings, the film offers as much fodder for history and political students as it does for theater and music fans.”

The documentary debuts on PBS on Oct. 21 at 9pm ET.
