Long Shot, the latest true-crime doc from Netflix, unpacks the unlikely collision of a murder case and an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In August 2003, 24-year-old Juan Catalan was arrested for the murder of a 16-year-old girl. He maintained his innocence, claiming he was at a Dodgers game the day the girl was shot outside her home. He was refused a lie detector test three times and spent five months in jail for the crime.

In 2004, Catalan was cleared and released. An episode of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm proved to be pivotal evidence: Season 4’s “The Car Pool Lane” features footage shot at the same Dodgers game Catalan claimed he was at, and after searching through unaired footage with series creator Larry David, his defense attorney spotted Catalan and his daughter in the crowd.

Is this some sort of covert promo for the next season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which returns Oct. 1? It wouldn’t be the weirdest thing happening in the world right now. Long Shot premieres Sept. 29.
