Disney shows come to YouTube—but they may not have the right audience

Disney has added  a bunch of  children's shows to its YouTube channel. But who will watch them? YouTube rules say you have to over 13 to view them.

Over the last year, YouTube has been signing up content producers to bolster the volume of professionally-produced content on the site, investing as much as $200 million in the process. Disney is among the companies YouTube has partnered with to produce original content for the site, and an interesting side effect of that deal has just come into effect.

On the Disney Shows channel, you can now view episodes from some of the Disney Channel’s most popular television series for free.

Among the shows you can catch episodes of are The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, The Emperor’s New School, and Hannah Montana. There are currently 67 videos available to watch on the channel, with all but 10 being full episodes of shows. Handily, Disney has created a playlist for each show’s episodes. Currently, it appears as though the episodes are only viewable in the U.S.

Curiously, none of the original content Disney has pledged to produce for the channel appears to have been uploaded yet. The other 10 videos on the channel are from its Last Minute Book Reports series, which The Huffington Post notes have run as podcasts on the Disney website.

Most of the episodes that are included on the channel are from shows that are aimed at a younger audience. However, as YouTube states in its Terms of Service, “If you are under 13 years of age, then please do not use the Service.”

It seems, then, that Disney and YouTube are gunning for the nostalgists yearning to relive their youth by watching their favorite childhood shows. Yet the selection of content that has been uploaded so far leaves a lot to be desired for some Disney aficionados.

“Was stoked until I saw the actual content,” tweeted Jason Chesebrough. Amy Sept, meanwhile, is hoping “to see more retro stuff added.”

Hopefully, Disney will continue adding more shows to the channel. After all, who wouldn’t enjoy watching an episode of DuckTales with their morning cereal?
