'I probably shouldn’t have said that.'

An old controversy involving Twitch streamer Pokimane took a new turn when Alinity Divine called her out during a live stream on Sunday.

During the stream, a Twitch user named Steflan, referring to Alinity, wrote on her chat, “Isn’t this the chick who earns money on other people’s content by demonetizing/claiming their videos?”

Alinity’s response was immediate.

“No, that would be Pokimane,” she said. A moment later with a smile, she said, “I probably shouldn’t have said that.” Then, she laughed before finally exclaiming, “Oh damn.”

It was barely even an insult, but it immediately got the internet talking.

Pokimane faced controversy in January when YouTube star PewDiePie called her out for copyright striking another YouTuber who used one of Pokimane’s videos for his own vlog. Pokimane defended herself by saying the YouTuber named Bowblax didn’t make a transformative change to her original content.

“Bowblax strung together all the tweets and videos from Twitter and just re-uploaded to YouTube with no editing or commentary or voiceover,” she said at the time.

She also said she would take down more videos if they were simply re-uploads of her Twitch stream or if they referenced her in a “gross or misleading title.”

Alinity, meanwhile, faced copyright strike controversy last May when PewDiePie referred to a compilation video of female Twitch users he was watching, which included Alinity, and called them “stupid Twitch thots.” A flustered Alinity saw that and threatened to file a copyright claim against PewDiePie’s video because it used her content without consent (she later said she didn’t actually file a claim).

Both female streamers continue to face scorn online, though. Which was probably what prompted a tweet from Pokimane. (It should be noted that she wrote this before Alinity’s stream). On Saturday, Pokimane wrote “If you’re a female streamer that actively and exclusively hates on other female streamers, I strongly suggest picking up a hobby lmao. That type of attitude isn’t gonna get you anywhere good.”

Still, Alinity’s comments went viral on the Livestream Fail subreddit, and on Sunday, she tweeted that people were making a big deal out of something that was a joke.

The comment section on Reddit was mostly negative and nasty toward Alinity anyway. And because she’s become a streamer who faces rampant sexist criticism, that type of vitriol is probably going to be constant whenever she makes any kind of newsworthy comment—whether she’s joking or not.
