Roy Moore, the Republican running for Alabama Senate who has been accused of dating teenagers in his 30s and of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old when he was 32, has warned there will be “revelations” surfacing regarding the Washington Post piece detailing the women’s stories.
According to CNN, Moore spoke at a Veterans Day event at the Mid-Alabama Republican Club in Birmingham on Saturday. There, he asserted the allegations were “yet another attack on my character and reputation in a desperate attempt to stop my political campaign for the United States Senate,” as well as “an attempt to divert attention from the true issues that affect the country.”
Moore went on to say that the allegations concern events from nearly 40 years ago and that he’s never provided alcohol to a minor (as one of the women who came forward said he did on a date) and has “not been guilty of sexual misconduct with anyone.” Moore said ongoing “investigations” are expected to surface “revelations” about the Post‘s story and its motivations.
On Thursday, the Post published a story detailing accounts from four women who say Moore had inappropriate relationships or sexually assaulted them as teenagers, when he was in his 30s. One woman, Leigh Corfman, and her mother said that they met Moore when he once offered to look after Corfman, 14 at the time, when he was an assistant district attorney. Days later, Corfman says Moore removed her clothes, touched her over her underwear, and placed her hand on his genitals over his underwear. Three other women said they dated Moore when they were between 16 and 18 years old.
Moore has since denied the allegations several times and went on Fox host Sean Hannity’s radio talk show to address them. Moore said he doesn’t know Cofrman, and though he said he knew the other two women, he said he didn’t remember dating them. Moore said he did “not generally” date 16- to 18-year-olds when he was in his 30s, and said it “would have been out of my customary behavior.” He also said he didn’t remember “dating any girl without the permission of her mother.”
