Girl dating her Jansport on Instagram is the best thing you’ve ever seen

Genevieve Blau and Jansport

There is no love as strong as that between a girl and her satchel.

Spring is in the air, which means plenty of opportunities for lazy dates on restaurant patios and long, romantic walks in the park. But what if you’re single? You could sign up for Tinder or OKCupid, but Genevieve Blau has found an alternative solution: dating her Jansport.

Blau has been documenting her dates on Instagram for about a month now. At first, their courtship was somewhat tentative.

But it quickly got hot and heavy.

It all started when Blau got off of work one evening and decided to take herself out to dinner in the West Village.

“I was going to a nice restaurant and I was wearing this backpack,” Blau told the Daily Dot. “And I was like, you know what? I’m going to choose to not feel bad about the fact that I’m wearing jeans and a T-shirt going to this fancy Italian restaurant and make this about something fun that I can do while I dine by myself.”

Blau requested a table for one. Two glasses of wine later, she asked her server to snap a photo of her with her Jansport.

Several weeks have passed and Blau has continued to snap photos with the hashtag #jansportdate. The snapshots show Blau canoodling with her Jansport in sports bars and at comedy shows. There are also more intimate photos of Blau spooning with her Jansport in bed. The captions mimic the mushy tones of someone who’s newly in love.

Blau says the stunt is intended to be playful rather than snarky. And in fact, she said she does feel a genuine emotional connection to her Jansport.

“I’m a single person and I don’t want to feel bad about going out and doing all the things I wanna do even if I’m alone,” she told the Daily Dot. The Instagram series is “sort of about how everyone’s boo-ing up right now… [But] dudes come and go. I have had this backpack for 10 fucking years.”

Guys. The night is not over. JanSport and I went to a show. Can you say hashtag romance? #jansportdate

Blau said friends she hasn’t heard from in years are responding to the jokey hashtag on social media. “People I haven’t spoken to… since college are being like, ‘I don’t know whats going on with your life right now, but I really like it.’”

On the other hand, not everyone gets the joke. “Every once in a while someone will be like ‘That’s sort of bleak,’” she said. “But I don’t think it’s bleak—I’m going out to restaurants with my backpack and it’s super fun!”

“I did it and I liked it and every time I do it I feel sort of silly and goofy,” she added. “It’s the stupidest thing in the world, but I love it.”

So how long does Blau intend to keep this love affair going? In other words, how serious is it between her and the backpack?

“I’m going to a family wedding next week and I’m thinking about taking Jansport with me,” Blau told me. “I’m curious to see what they will all say.” If you’re interested in seeing how this love affair turns out, be sure to follow Blau—and, of course, her backpack—on Instagram.
