The past year may have been pretty terrible at times, but leave it to a perennial optimist to remind of you of the bigger picture.

Former astronaut Chris Hadfield has seen that bigger picture—from space no less—which only proves his point. Despite setbacks, we’ve come a long way as a species, but it’s easy to forget that along the way. We’ve eradicated diseases, decreased mortality rates, and more research will create new changes for the better.

“Our world is not as bad a place as we often feel it to be,” Hadfield said. “It is easy to look to the future and lament on how far there is left to go, but sometimes it is helpful to stop and reflect on just how far we’ve come.”
