Can you imagine what would happen if one of the Puppy Bowl stars made it on to the Super Bowl field?

Something along those lines happened this week when a cat made its way onto the field during a televised English Premier League soccer game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium.

Play was suspended for a minute while the animal made its debut on the hallowed turf. It was safely carried away by a steward. Its owner has not yet been identified, according to Metro.

As quick as a, well, a cat, several parody accounts popped up on Twitter to celebrate the feline. Two of them, liverpoolfccat and CatAnfield have amassed a few thousand followers apiece. However, AnfieldCat is the cream of the crop, having garnered 42,000 followers in less than two days.

As you might expect, the accounts are littered with bad puns and soccer jokes. For instance, CatAnfield tweeted, “Hopefully going to Paw-tugal for my holidays this summer. #meow.”

“Hoping to get more time on the pitch at Old Trafford, I might have to just sit on the sidelines, a bit like (Manchester United player) Michael Owen,” joked AnfieldCat, who also wrote, “So many nice tweets from you all, Ashley Cole could only dream of this reception #anfieldcat #meow.”

The cat’s fleeting appearance has proven to be such a hit that a gambling company has begun accepting bets on the next animal to enter the field of play during a game. At odds of 250/1 for an elephant, I’ll take that bet.
