The Morning GIF: Recursive roses
Here at the Daily Dot, we swap GIF images every morning. Now we’re looping you in. In the Morning GIF, we feature a popular—or just plain cool—GIF we found on Reddit, Canvas, or elsewhere on the Internet.
It's not all pretty posies on computer artist Miyö Van Stenis' Tumblr, but in between random model shots and some very NSFW content, there is room for a charmingly Victorian moss rose wallpaper pattern in a spectrum of pink. And a sense of impending doom.
By repeating the pattern as a preview of an endless series, Van Stenis brings to life the constraints of a hypothetical Victorian woman's life story: delicate, decorative, decorous. She tries to escape; she dodges left, she dodges right, but ultimately she settles back into a dead center. She cannot escape her beautiful, quaint, doomed future, which looks exactly like her present, which looks exactly like her past. More of the same. More of the same pretty pink rosebuds going on and on, getting smaller and smaller, ultimately vanishing altogether.
While Van Stenis does variations on the same recursive preview theme, each featuring a very different image, this one's ironic juxtaposition of old-fashioned moss roses and modern technology got it featured on Süergif, a curated art GIF Tumblr.
