The stereotype of the slick, shady car salesman ready to part a fool with his money in exchange for a lemon has become ubiquitous over the years. Now, it’s turned into a full-blown meme. The “slaps roof of car” meme takes an imaginary conversation between a car salesman and potential buyer, in which the salesman ostensibly gives the roof of a car a good slap and says: “this bad boy can fit so much X in it.”

As far as what “X” means, well that’s up to the eye of the meme-holder, such as the following relatively literal meta one that takes a cheap shot at a used 2008 Honda Civic:

Like most good memes worth their salt, this one started with a random viral tweet from years before, according to Know Your Meme. On September 30, 2014, a Twitter user posted the following absurd tweet as an ostensible conversation between a car salesman and a prospective buyer.

Some variations bubbled up here and there over the years, but the meme didn’t pick up steam until late last year when one of the tweets made its way to the /r/me_irl subreddit. But then, just earlier this week, the meme exploded in popularity when Twitter user @MirGucci posted the original tweet accompanied by a crappy stock illustration.

And from there, the meme took off on Reddit’s Dank Memes:

And of course, Wendy’s Twitter got into the game:

This one crossed streams, you could say, by referring to the “pee is stored in the balls” meme:

Likewise, this one refers to the Twitter ranking meme that’s also popular right now:

Personally, I’m just curious now as to how much spaghetti can fit into a car. A job for Mythbusters, perhaps? Sadly, we may never actually have the answer.
