After Popeyes’ hit chicken sandwich sold out nationwide, the fast-food chain has introduced its “Bring Your Own Bun” campaign, urging customers to bring their own “bun,” order a three-piece chicken tender meal, and make their own sandwich on the spot.

“Try our new BYOB! It’s basically The Sandwich! Only no mayo. Or pickles. And you bring your own bun… Really it’s just three tenders…” the Popeyes Twitter account wrote, along with a video announcing the launch.

It’s a temporary solution until the chicken restaurant can replenish their shortage of chicken sandwiches across the nation. But the reactions to Popeyes’ suggestion has people cackling.

“Popeyes just told y’all to come with your hair washed and blown out,” Twitter user @ChefDomonique joked.

Another equated the move to “Spirit Airlines energy.”

“Popeye’s asking you to assemble a chicken sandwich at home like IKEA furniture. Wow. Chick Fil A would never,” Angela Davis tweeted, referencing the Popeyes-Chick-fil-A feud.

Others thought up what bread they would be bringing to Popeyes.

“I’m finna pull up to Popeyes with a bag of Hawaiian rolls,” Twitter user @SangoBeats wrote.

Popeyes ran out of chicken sandwiches after it became a viral sensation. The sandwich was apparently so good that not even Bojangles’, Wendy’s, or Chick-fil-A could compare.

The initial launch of the sandwich started with what became known as the “Chicken Sandwich Wars” and saw various fast-food chains fighting to be crowned with having the supreme chicken sandwich. But Popeyes clearly stood out as the winner, as it’s the only one that completely sold out across the nation.

“Y’all. We love that you love The Sandwich. Unfortunately we’re sold out (for now),” Popeyes announced on Aug. 27.

It is unclear when the iconic chicken sandwich will officially return, but for now, it seems Popeyes is doing just about anything to keep the chicken sandwich momentum going. We’ll see if it works.
