It’s sad and distressing that Tide would have to implore people not to ingest Tide Pods after doing so became a popular meme, but that’s just the kind of disappointment we’ve already come to expect from 2018. Thankfully, a recipe for edible Tide Pods recently surfaced on Tumblr, and three days ago, a YouTuber put it to the test.
In the video, he stocks up on all the required Jell-O, gelatin mix, and condensed milk. He struggles in vain to create a thin, membrane-like gelatin mixture to encase the rest of the “pod,” but instead has the sad realization that gelatin is made from animal bones and regrets all the times he’s willingly eaten it.
Eventually, he finds a successful method for making the gelatin casing and proceeds to craft the main rectangular piece of the pod from a mixture of gelatin and condensed milk. He employs a friend to carve the iconic Tide swirls out of two bowls of orange and blue Jell-O—mostly because he’s too drunk on whiskey to do it himself.
After two days of failed attempts and lots of improvising, he finally creates a passable, edible imitation of the extremely toxic Tide Pod. It tastes predictably underwhelming, but it makes for an entertaining watch. (As do his random attacks on the dummy occupying the corner of his living room.)
In the end, what did he learn from his Tide Pod endeavor? “Binging with Babish should do this and make a really great version of it.”
