There’s been a ton of new info lately on Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human, but now fans of the studio’s brand of choose-your-own-adventure storytelling can judge for themselves whether it lives up to the hype. A demo for the game will launch on PlayStation 4’s online store starting April 24.
Detroit: Become Human focuses on several androids in a world where robotic humanoids are utilized as slaves and playthings. When a revolution is sparked, the world spirals into a conflict of morals and survival. Quantic Dreams previously developed the heavily story-focused games Heavy Rain, Indigo Prophecy, and most recently Beyond: Two Souls, which starred Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe in its lead roles.
The demo focuses on a character named Connor, an android designed to aid humans in hunting down rogue androids who’ve escaped their masters. He’s got some nifty tech inside that allows him to more thoroughly comb through evidence and interrogate suspects. The scene in question, titled “Hostage,” forces Connor to rescue a young girl from being killed by her android former house servant in a tense standoff. Players need to scout the area for clues before engaging with the rogue android, where they’ll make some tense dialogue choices. It’s tricky because if you’re not careful, you may miss clues to the android’s motivations, limiting your options when negotiating and forcing the rogue android to take more desperate measures. You may be playing a robot, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel bad if you screw up and doom a little kid.
Detroit: Become Human launches May 25.
