Flat lays are a common image used by fashion bloggers and stylish types on Instagram. They essentially show a number of items that make up an outfit grouped together, laid out flat, and photographed. It’s a fun way to display the outfits you put together and want to show off to the world. Flat lays are also a favorite of online fandom fashion retailer Black Milk Clothing, which occasionally encourages fans to get creative with photos for flat lay competitions.

Over the last few weeks they’ve held two competitions to celebrate the release of their newest geeky line inspired by Disney, titled “Princesses and Villains.” Fans were encouraged to create princess and villain-themed flat lays using an item from Black Milk, then submit the photos on Facebook. They could also share them on Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtags #‎bmprincessflatlay‬ and #bmvillainsflatlay.
