Beloved ethnic recipes—passed down across generations, uniting countrymen and women in the process—have had it too good, too long. You make guacamole long enough, you forget that this food exists to make you feel.

As the New York Times noted on Wednesday, English green peas add an intense sweetness and chunky textures to guacamole. The Mexican dish—which has been made since at least the 16th century—was just asking for an on-fleek millennial remix. And while the left and the right denounced the “radical” move publicly, moving forward is an apolitical notion.
