As a GoFundMe page collecting money for President Donald Trump‘s border wall continues to collect millions of dollars, a new page has been set up in response to it.
The page “Ladders to Get Over Trump’s Wall” has raised more than $19,000 as of Thursday afternoon, and despite its name, it’s not actually raising money to buy ladders.
The money collected will be donated to the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), according to the GoFundMe. RAICES is a Texas-based non-profit that helps with legal services for immigrant children, families, and refugees.
“We saw some folks are raising money for a border wall to keep out our migrant siblings and fellow human beings, who are fleeing violence and persecution and whose tragically-underpaid labor is essential to the U.S. economy,” the page reads. “Seems like a bad idea on countless levels for everyone involved. Maybe we should focus on human rights and creating a community that reflects our supposed values.”
The page has collected nearly $20,000 in 15 hours.
Charlotte Clymer, the creator of the page, told the Daily Dot in an email that the GoFundMe was created after the @HoarseWisperer Twitter account joked about making a fund for ladders.
“I laughed and then thought: ‘Wait… why not?,'” Clymer said, later adding: “I’m a big fan of RAICES and proud of the work they’re doing in Texas. They love the project, and we’re in the process of adding them to the GoFundMe page as a team member so they can withdraw the funds directly when this ends. We’re kind of playing this by ear. If we keep up a steady rate of donations, I see no reason not to have the page active for a few weeks. In any case, once it plateaus and ends, RAICES will transfer the funds on their own.”
“This GoFundMe isn’t really about ladders at all. It’s about lifting people up,” the page reads.
As of Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe raising money for the border wall had collected nearly $6 million.
