Pop star Charli XCX is catching heat after some took her âMiss Should Be Headlinerâ sash as shade for this yearâs Coachella star, Green Day. Photographers caught the âBoom Clapâ singer in the sash at the afterparty as she danced by the DJ. She posted those photos to her Instagram, and now her supporters and Green Day fans took to social media to argue about who deserved the spot.
Older punks feel that after 30 years of making hits, Green Day deserves their day in the sun. Some have accused Charli XCX of âBratâ behavior, thinking that her recent success went to her head. Meanwhile, those who havenât listened to a single Billie Joe Armstrong lyric derided his band for becoming âpolitical.â Again.
Charli XCXâs âMiss Should Be Headlinerâ sashâand why it stirred controversy
The creator of the beloved COVID-era album âHow Iâm Feeling Nowâ wore multiple outfits before and after the bands played on Sunday, but the sash she wore over her frilly white mini dress caught the most attention. The matching sash, framed in pink, reads âMiss Should Be Headliner.â

Charli XCX hasnât yet commented on this outfit and whether the message was a joke, or if she genuinely believed she deserved it more than Green Day. The singer reached the heights of critical acclaim in 2024 with âBrat,â gaining the title of the highest-rated album of the year and the 15th-highest-rated album of all time, according to Metacritic. It topped the Billboard charts and won two Grammys.
The height of Green Dayâs success came at a different time, so it can be hard to compare the two. Their 1994 album âDookieâ sold over 20 million copies worldwideâone of the biggest sellers ever. Of course, albums donât really sell anymore, but âBratâ got 46.72 million streams in its first week.

So, who deserves to headline Coachella in 2025, Green Day or Charli XCX? Surely the opinions posted on the internet will settle this.
Green Day fans say she crossed a line
Who you believe should have headlined the festival this year probably depends on whether youâre old enough to remember how huge Green Day was at their peak. While some have called Charli XCX âthe future of pop,â the pop-punk bank that exploded in the 1990s represents popular music history.
One thingâs for sureâGreen Day fans donât think the sash was a good look.

âPutting aside talent, impact, success and all (green day wins in all categories) this loser behaviour is embarrassing if you think your ego is more important than the message theyâre sharing and the risk theyâre taking by speaking up,â wrote @smokessignals on X. âSheâs not only classless but ignorant too.â
Meanwhile, Green Day, 38 years into their career, still has more monthly listeners than Charli, at her peak. Y’all kids need to sit down and learn about the world outside of you echo chambers. https://t.co/bGMhFOSgI3 pic.twitter.com/4XEQsfqUWS

âAn acclaimed punk rock group thatâs been around for 20+ years & finally got to headline this f*cka** festival, only for some lady with a mean girl mentality to think she should headline with NO acclaimed discography but 2 singles from different decades,â said @swiftpropaganda.

Even some Charli XCX fans didnât love the attitude she projected Sunday night.
âIâm starting to hate who charli xcx is becoming,â confessed @bdpix69420. âActually Iâve hated it since the normies blew up brat and sent charliâs ego into orbit.â

Charliâs defenders say she should have headlined
On the other hand, some of her fans are acting like the Coachella snub this year was borderline criminal behavior on the part of the festival. User @pro6lema commented that âcoachella letting charli get this disrespected needs to be investigated⌠imagine picking green day over the future of pop.â

Green Day has been political for quite a while
The argument involving Green Day is getting bogged down by those accusing the band of becoming âtoo political.â People started throwing these accusations around in 2004 with the launch of âAmerican Idiot,â which represented a shift from singing about being a teen to calling former President George W. Bush stupid.

Green Day continued to lean into political messages as the years went by. Back when people called it âTwitter,â lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong once even told President Donald Trump that he was âf*cking fired,â adding, âGo back to your sh*t hotel.â That hasnât stopped social media accounts from whining that the band has suddenly âgone wokeâ every time their name appears in headlines.
But the old heads know that the bisexual-led punk band has always been political. X user @blingblingkjh90 pointed out that âgreen day is a fully queer band who has been speaking up about how shitty and corrupt the world is for well over 20 years they have every right to be headling coachella.â

Of course, if politics is your disqualifier for a Coachella headliner for whatever reason, why would you vote for Charli XCX? Have we already forgotten that Kamala is Brat?
