Tom Petty passed away on Monday night, after being found in cardiac arrest on Sunday. Monday afternoon was a fraught time: There were conflicting reports about whether he was dead or alive.
His daughter, AnnaKim Violette Petty, called out Rolling Stone in particular for erroneously reporting that he had passed on when he was still alive. “This is my father not a celebrity,” she wrote on Instagram. “An artist and human being.”
But her Instagram became a timeline, as AnnaKim posted photos and memories of her father and reported from the hospital, even updating fans that members of the Heartbreakers were there. “Tom Petty is an American Icon because his heart has always put human rights first,” she wrote in one post.
