Rob Lowe apparently encountered something called a “wood ape” during a recent camping trip, and he was scared for his life.

The Parks and Recreation star has a new reality show on A&E where he and his sons travel the country investigating mysterious phenomena. An underwater alien base off the coast of Malibu? They’re on it. Haunted reformatory for boys? They’re there.

But Lowe told Entertainment Weekly the scariest encounter took place in the Ozark Mountains, which stretch between Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. While camping there to investigate the “wood ape,” strange things started to happen.

“We [were] 100 miles from the nearest town,” Lowe said. “We spent 45 minutes on the most rugged, brutal mountain trails. It’s 1 in the morning. There are a lot of serious former military men with loaded weapons … then something starts approaching our camps that is defying their orders to stop and their warnings that [they were] armed.”

Lowe explained that he’s “fully aware” the story makes him sound like “a crazy, Hollywood kook,” but he was definitely “lying on the ground thinking [he] was going to be killed.”

Apparently, his passion for the paranormal is personal, though.

“Since I was a little boy, I loved spooky legends and scary mysteries,” he explains in the Lowe Files trailer. “And when I had boys of my own, we bonded over those campfire stories.”

Nothing like a father-son death scare to bring the family closer!

The Lowe Files debuts on Aug. 2.
