In the ‘90s, John Kricfalusi, aka “John K.,” entertained millions of kids and adults with his deranged cartoon Ren & Stimpy. Now, after years out of the limelight, the animator is hoping to make a comeback with a new project called “Cans Without Labels,” and he’s hoping to fund it using Kickstarter.

According to John K.’s Kickstarter page, “Cans Without Labels” will focus on George Liquor, an old-school Republican modeled after the cartoonist’s father, whose only maxim is “It’s discipline that begets love!”

Watch his pitch video below:

Kricfalusi’s goal is to raise $110,000 by August 17, 2012. As an incentive, he’s offering several works of original art at different pledge points, including “an original Cans Without Labels hand-drawn scene” ($300), a “glorious hand painted background from a Spümco cartoon” ($3,000), and even the opportunity to be drawn into the cartoon ($10,000).

As of this writing, fans have contributed $10,339 on the first day of the Kickstarter campaign.

John K. is the latest celebrity to eschew the traditional venues for greenlighting a project and turn to Kickstarter instead. Just last week, Community creator Dan Harmon and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman launched a campaign to fund a stop-motion animated film.

Is this becoming the new norm? If so, it’ll be interesting to see what happens when a celebrity’s vanity project finally falls into the 41% of Kickstarters that fail.
