Natalie Portman brought something “subtle” to the Oscars red carpet: the names of all the women left out the best director category this year.
Portman backed up her viral 2018 Golden Globes moment, in which she pointed out the “all-male nominees” in the best director category, by embroidering the names of the female directors who made Oscar-worthy films this year, but were left out of the all-male best director category, on her Dior cape.

The names include Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Mati Diop (Atlantics), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), and Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire). Portman told the L.A. Times she wanted to “recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year, in a subtle way.”
