Atlanta rapper Future on Tuesday shared a remix of “Mask Off,” from his chart-topping fifth studio album FUTURE, featuring Kendrick Lamar.
Lamar’s percussive, singsong verse neatly contrasts Future’s laidback warble and the song’s mischievous flute hook. The remix comes one month after the duo delivered a fiery rendition of the track during Lamar’s weekend-one Coachella set.
It also serves as a mid-year victory lap for both rappers. In February, Future released two back-to-back No. 1 albums, FUTURE and HNDRXX; “Mask Off” has since become his highest-charting single to date, peaking at No. 5 earlier this month. Meanwhile Lamar’s DAMN. notched the highest first-week sales of 2017 with 603,000 copies, marking his third consecutive No. 1 album.
The track marks just the second collaboration between the two rappers, after Mike Will Made-It’s “Buy the World,” off his 2014 mixtape Ransom. Perhaps this remix hints at future collaborations between the rap titans. What a Time to Be Alive Pt. II, anyone?
