For the YouTube couple, it proved a lucrative arrangement.

The marriage between Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau that never was is now officially on hiatus. Both YouTube stars released statements on Instagram late Thursday night, discussing how much they enjoy each other’s company but how much they also want to focus on their lives separately.

Paul wrote, “As Tana and I sit next to each other writing captions about taking a break we’re literally laughing at how crazy and stupid the past couple months have been and cracking jokes at how silly this all seems. i’m keeping custody of Thor [his dog] but Tana unfortunately gets my Lamborghini. I wouldn’t change anything that happened.. we’re best friends and right now it’s best for us to focus on our lives & see what the future holds. (p.s our friends started playing sad music while we were writing these captions and we all started laughing our asses off.. this is bitter sweet but it’s what’s best for us right now) the last thing we wanna see is fan pages speculating ‘what happened’ we truly just need a second to focus on our own lives and ourselves. luv u mongeau.”

In one comment, Mongeau wrote, “ur still my bestie so that’s cool wanna get married.”

Posting the same photo as Paul on her own Instagram account, Mongeau wrote, “ok i don’t rly know how to do a ‘we’re taking a break’ post & this is weird as fuck… i’m happy to still be able to sit with Jake and laugh as we do this- but for right now we both are taking a break to focus on our own very crazy lives… i’ll never know what the future holds and i will always love Jake and everything we did. i’m grateful to know throughout this i’ve made a best friend for life & found someone to do life with when no one understood me. here’s to 2020, working on us, and my new Lamborghini since i get half of everything! no need for crazy speculations- this is coming from a place of nothing but love. i love u Jakey. thank u for this past year.”

In his own comment back to her, Paul wrote “wuv u.”

The two claimed they got married in July, though there was never an official marriage license filed in Las Vegas, where the ceremony occurred. At that ceremony, a brawl broke out as the two said their vows, highlighting the silliness of the entire event, and as the night wound to an end, Paul and Mongeau were seen leaving the venue going in different directions.

They also charged fans $50 to watch a broadcast of the ceremony, but the stream was so terrible that Apple and Google Play had to issue refunds.

Not everybody is impressed by the apparent breakup.

Since the two declared last May that they were in a romantic relationship, both YouTubers have gained more than 1 million subscribers a piece in the past seven months, according to YouTube analytics site Social Blade. So, even if the fake relationship didn’t work out, at least their YouTube clout has grown.

Perhaps the loving feelings between Paul and Mongeau are real—and if not, the acting they’ve done in this regard is commendable—but the marriage never was. And like any good YouTuber whose latest story arc has run its course, they’ll both look for something new to keep their fans swimming in (real or fake) content.
