Disney now has control of Hulu under a new deal with Comcast.
The deal was announced on Tuesday and a press release from Disney states that the company “will assume full operational control of Hulu, effectively immediately.” The deal will allow the Comcast-owned NBCUniversal to continue licensing content to Hulu through 2024. Comcast can “require” Disney to buy its 33% interest in NBCUniversal after five years. The agreement states that in 2024, NBCU can also be “required” to sell its interest to Disney.
Disney is set to launch its streaming service, Disney+, in November. NBCUniversal is debuting its streaming service in 2020 and at an event on Monday ad chair Linda Yaccarino hinted that popular titles that are streaming elsewhere (like The Office) would finally be migrating over.
Last month, AT&T sold its 10% stake in Hulu. In March, Disney bought Fox—paving the way for Disney to take over the platform. It’s not clear what the fate of Hulu’s more popular licensed shows will be, or if a price hike it coming, but subscribers will likely get access to Disney’s growing slate of original programming.
