Apple is getting the ball rolling on its ambitious plan for original programming, and it’s starting with the true-crime trend.
The company has ordered 10 episodes of Are You Sleeping, helmed by Reese Witherspoon’s production Hello Sunshine and starring Octavia Spencer. The series is based on Kathleen Barber’s book of the same name, which explores the dilemma a woman faces when she discovers a podcast is looking into her father’s murder. It also puts a timely mark on our public interest in solving cold cases. Serial‘s Sarah Koenig was reportedly a consultant for the series during development.
Hello Sunshine is also set to debut a morning TV drama with Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, and an unnamed comedy with Kristen Wiig. Apple has also promised projects from La La Land‘s Damien Chazelle, M. Night Shyamalan, and Steven Spielberg.
