Before Sunday’s Grammys broadcast even begun, Adele was a winner. During the preshow ceremony, 25 won best pop vocal album while “Hello” took best pop solo performance. However, even without the awards, Adele kicked off the Grammys like a true star with a stunning rendition of the giant, arena-filling “Hello.”

Taking to the stage by herself, Adele showcased exactly why she’s the reigning champion of vocal pop. There was no dancing, no pageantry—just a world class voice belting of a soulful hit.

Whether or not she ends the night picking up album of the year, song of the year, and record of the year, Adele christened the Grammys by drawing attention to music over stage craft. In a night of fancy and fiery performances, that simplicity should be appreciated.
