After last week’s release of the first Rogue One trailer, many Star Wars fans began suggesting that Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is a good candidate to be Rey’s mom, but the actress who plays Rey has some bad news for them.

Speaking to MTV’s Josh Horowitz at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night, Daisy Ridley gently shut down the theory—but not without a little bit of trolling along the way. She’s known the identity of Rey’s parents since filming The Force Awakens, but of course she’s not going to reveal the answer to the new trilogy’s biggest question at an awards show.

“I mean, I’m not being funny, you guys,” she said. “But just because she’s white and got brown hair, do you know what I mean? Like, it doesn’t mean she’s my mum. I also don’t know if that will work out time-wise because I’m trying to think about how much time has gone—I don’t know. Maybe she is.”

Whether fans are onto something or are completely off-base, Ridley brings up a good point. There is an approximately 15-year gap between Rogue One and Rey’s birth (which took place around 11 years after the Battle of Endor seen in Return of the Jedi), although we probably won’t know exactly how many years before A New Hope the spinoff film occurs until we get closer to its release.

We also don’t know Jyn’s age yet—just that she’s been on her own since she was 15—so that would be a big factor in whether it would even be possible for her to be Rey’s mom. Of course, that won’t stop fans from digging even deeper into the possibility as we get more footage from Rogue One over the next eight months.

Let’s dispel once and for all with this fiction that Ridley doesn’t know what she’s doing. She knows exactly what she’s doing.
