Nipple field day

Leave it to redditors to turn nature into one big breast fixation.

Social news site Reddit has given the world a great many things: pizza giving charities, snack food exchanges, safe-for-work porn.

This weekend, redditors introduced a new contender: field nipples.

Yes, that’s right: Field nipples. Mountains or natural protuberances of any kind that look like breasts — real-looking breasts, with real-looking nipples, folks. And no, probably not safe for work.

The term became a fairly big hit on Reddit over the weekend. Redditors even created their own section devoted to the anatomically correct earthen mounds: r/fieldnipples (the section requires you to say you’re over 18 before being able to click through.)

Like a lot of memes, it all started on a lark. Redditor quazimoto69 posted a screen grab from a 70s era porn film called Flesh Gordon Meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders to the site’s r/WTF section. In that image a man stands awestruck by a powerfully lactating, um, field nipple (there really is no other way to describe it).

Within two hours, r/fieldnipples had been created. It was later featured in the site’s r/bestof section, where redditors highlight the best content from around the site.

Will the bizarre meme and subreddit continue to grow?

As the section’s creator, SuperCyan observed, “finding photographic evidence of fieldnipples is hard work.” It’s not like the Earth just sprouts these things up on a daily basis, after all: we’re talking geologic movements that take thousands of years.

Still, the section already has about 30 submissions and about 500 readers — not too shabby for something that’s less than a day old.

“If Reddit has taught me one thing it’s that there are some things you can’t fucking unsee,” wrote redditor salter888 referring to all the strange places on the site.

Maybe, someday, Internet nerds will tell their Internet nerd grandchildren: I was there when field nipples were born, on the Internet. And I still can’t unsee them.
