There’s a reason very few of the novels written during National Novel Writing Month ever see publication.
That’s because the annual exercise, now in its 13th year, is more of a creative sprint than a well-executed marathon. Participants attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days, and sometimes that means tearing through a lot of half-baked ideas —and that’s the point: The goal is for aspiring writers to get something down on paper without overthinking it.
This year’s batch of novels might be even crazier than usual. Under the hashtag #NaNoWriMoOpeners, Twitter users are suggesting their most hilariously bad ideas for NaNoWriMo participants to borrow for their opening lines.
According to Topsy, there have been more than 2,500 suggested openers so far—and we’ve only just begun.
