Six months ago, eighteen piglets and two sows were saved from a burning barn in Wiltshire, England, after an electrical fault caused sixty tons of hay to catch fire. Luckily, the Pewsey Fire Department arrived before the blaze could spread too far.
But six months is a long time. Long enough for a group of piglets to become full grown tasty pigs, and farm manager Rachel Rivers decided the best way to thank the firefighters was with a bunch of sausages. Sausages the came from the very pigs they had rescued.
“I’m sure vegetarians will hate this.” she said.
Turns out she was right. Mimi Bekhechi, a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) spokesperson, said the pigs were “no better off” than they would have been if they had died in the fire. “We’ll be sending Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service packs of vegan sausages so that they can see how easy it is to truly be heroes for pigs—by sparing them all suffering,”
But farm owner Canon Gerald Osbourne said the pigs were destined for the slaughterhouse regardless. “An inevitable part of farming is the death of an animal which gives us the food to eat,” he said.
For their part, the firefighters thanked the farm for their generosity and said the sausages were “highly recommended.”
“We can tell no porkies, the sausages were fantastic,” a spokesman said on Tuesday.
