When gay porn actor Luka Magnotta stabbed a man to death with an ice pick, then mailed his victim’s limbs to elementary schools, it wasn’t long before the footage of the attack surfaced on a shock site called Best Gore.
Magnotta’s trial will happen in 2014. In the meantime, the legal repercussions of the murder have spread to Best Gore’s owner.
Mark Marek posted an 11-minute clip titled “1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick” to his site on May 25, 2012. The video allegedly showed Luka Magnotta repeatedly stabbing a restrained and naked man named Lin Jun with an ice pick. Magnotta would then proceed to dismember his victim and mail body parts to the headquarters of various Canadian political parties. Magnotta was eventually apprehended on June 4, 2012, in Berlin and expedited to Montreal.
On Tuesday, the 38-year-old website operator was charged on Tuesday night with corrupting morals, as dictated by Section 163(1)(a) of the Canadian Criminal Court.
“It is alleged that Marek posted the video online in Edmonton, knowing the video that was sent to him by Luka Magnotta was depicting a real murder,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark confirmed in a statement released by Edmonton Police.
In a June 2012 interview with CBC Radio, Marek defended his site, claiming that it was meant to be a reflection of the real world.
“I post videos of actual events that take place around the world to help people understand what really is happening so they don’t live in a fantasy, but fall into reality,” he told host Brent Bambury.
“This approach helped to prevent countless disasters and made our streets and neighborhoods safer. It also made it safer for people who do all they can to hurt me or the site.”
Marek was remanded and is scheduled to have a bail hearing on Thursday. According the the aforementioned statement, he could potentially face other criminal charges pending further investigation into the case.
