Losing a body part and having it surgically reattached usually results in time off from work to recover, but New York Rangers defenseman Kevin Klein didn’t have time to rest. After emergency ear-reattachment surgery, he jumped back into the rink to scoring the game-winning goal.
Early on in Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Klein lost part of his ear after he was hit with a high stick by Zach Stills. Even the commentators were slightly grossed out as he skated out of play with a bloodied ear.
Klein had his ear reattached while the game continued. At the end of three periods, the game was tied.
Klein rejoined the action in overtime, and when he got the puck toward the end of the period, he just went for it.
“Good for him,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “He lost a piece of his ear, and they sewed it back. Say what you want about hockey players, but they are tough.”
