Show of hands: Who thinks Sept. 11 is a weird day for The Sims to run a “Twitter takeover?”

While much of the world will mourn those lost on that fateful 2001 day, an unlucky Electronic Arts employee will have to happily tweet the answers to any questions players may have about a movie-themed expansion pack for popular life-simulation game The Sims 3.

The Sims’ official Facebook page promoted the Twitter Takeover event to its more than 13 million fans, and so far, 262 people have RSVP’d to attend. Almost everyone posting on the event page expressed excitement about the new pack and the Q&A. Just one raised concerns about the timing of the event.

There’s nothing wrong with using games as a respite from a tough situation, as Sept. 11 invariably is for many every year, but “taking over” Twitter from those grieving the loss of thousands of lives in a terror attack is probably not the world’s smartest PR move.

The Daily Dot has reached out to EA for a comment on the timing of the promotion.
