You’ve never seen Archie like this before.
The long-running comic has already been transformed into a successful CW teen drama, but now it’s teaming up with Spotify to give fans a unique way to experience the comics. With help from Madefire, Archie has been turned into a six-episode motion comic series titled Spotlight Archie—The New Riverdale, which adapts the first six issues of the Archie run from writer Mark Waid and artists Fiona Staples, Annie Wu, and Veronica Fish.
The episodes bring the visuals of the comic page to life frame by frame with a mix of background music and audio and dialogue and inner thoughts of its characters are performed by voice actors.
“Archie has always been about trying to find new ways to get comics to fans and readers,” Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics’ Publisher and CEO, said in a statement. “And when the opportunity to work with Spotify arose, it was a perfect match. Being able to reposition these modern classics for new readers in this unique, motion comic format makes perfect sense and we can’t wait for fans to experience these beloved Archie stories in a new way.”
Although you can access the Archie motion comic on the Spotify desktop app, the format is designed to work better on mobile. The motion comic series might not interest everyone who’s already read the arc that Spotlight Archie — The New Riverdale, but the new format will give old and new comic fans alike the ability to get into a new series and the format will likely give those who are unable to access and engage with Archie comics otherwise new access.
