Kickstarter is often home to creative board game ideas, but Rising Sun from CoolMiniOrNot has taken the crowd-funding platform by storm. The game pits player-controlled clans against each other in a crossover of politics and fantastical mythology.

Rising Sun debuted recently with an ultimate goal of $300,000 and currently sits at well over $2 million pledged. However, the game isn’t expected to ship until April 2018.

The miniature sculpture of warriors, priests, and beasts add a great layer of detail to the experience, as well as the detailed, segmented map. Each match will be played out in seasons, with players calling their forces to arms and fighting for control.

Rising Sun is a board game for 3 to 5 players set in legendary feudal Japan. As the Kami descend from the heavens to reshape the land in their image, it is up to each player to lead their clan to victory. Use politics to further your cause, negotiate to seek the most profitable alliances, worship the Kami to gain their favor, recruit monsters out of legend to bolster your forces, and use your resources wisely to be victorious in battle.

Created by acclaimed designer Eric M. Lang, Rising Sun reunites the same creative forces responsible for the smash hit Blood Rage, with stunning artwork by Adrian Smith and intricate miniatures sculpted under the direction of Mike McVey.

There is only one pledge level priced at $100 that earns you the full box and exclusive bonuses, including a special Phoenix miniature figure. Stretch goals for the project add several new figures to change up the game’s dynamics.

If you’re curious about how the mechanics work, the team made a video showing off a standard round of play.
