Can you spot all the references to the books?

The 2004 A Series of Unfortunate Events movie was met with dubious reactions from critics, fans, and even author Lemony Snicket himself. So it’s no surprise that everyone jumped at a reported trailer for the new Netflix adaptation—before realizing it was just a fan production.

The fan-made trailer captured what fans hope will be the spirit of the show with plenty of references to the novels: a leech in a jar, dirty pasta dishes, and a book titled “How To Start Fires.” It also has an appropriately gothic soundtrack from Amanda Palmer‘s former band The Dresden Dolls.

Snicket (or rather his real-world “representative” Daniel Handler) was closely involved in the making of Netflix’s TV series, so we’re cautiously optimistic that the real thing will be as faithful to the books as this fake trailer.

Correction: This trailer is fan-made and not an official promotion for the Netflix series.
