The members of One Direction strike hysteria in the hearts of fans, but however much love we have for Harry Styles, hysteria itself isn’t actually any fun to experience. Far from being a pulsating orgy waiting to happen, 1D fangirls probably don’t actually relish the thought of meeting their idols in a state of incoherent sobbing and jangled nerves.

That’s why what Styles did last night for a fan named Ruth is so lovely.

At a book signing for their latest book Who We Are, Ruth had a panic attack. Styles, spotting her surrounded by paramedics and breathing out of a paper bag, reportedly ignored the advice of his bodyguard and came over to comfort her:

Ruth said she had been struggling to calm down for hours—or more accurately days. Here she is on Vine three days ago, trying to stop freaking out about the prospect of meeting the 1D members up close and personal:

At the event, other girls waiting in the queue noticed her having trouble and asked if she was OK. Eventually the paramedics were summoned.

At this point, you might think that the legions of catty, competitive fangirls in the 1D fandom probably pelted her with hate, right? Wrong, jerk. Fans unleashed an outpouring of support for Ruth and her dream moment with Styles across all platforms. On Twitter, her follower count ballooned to 50,000 people and on Vine, fans used her past tweets about how she hoped to one day meet the star as inspiration:

As Yahoo UK pointed out, this isn’t the first time Harry’s gone out of his way for fans, including the time he orchestrated an on-stage proposal and the time he went on a virtual date with a terminally ill fan. (He even gave her his phone number!) But this time around, even his mom applauded his good-deed-doing:

We’re not sure why NME recently named him their Villain of the Year. Maybe because it’s too easy to pick on the floofy-haired boy band member?

We won’t be making that mistake any time soon.
