Gwen Stacy is unique among Marvel heroines, a famously fridged girlfriend who’s made a huge comeback by taking on her boyfriend Spider-Man’s role in an alternate universe. Now, after turning “dead heroines taking over male superhero titles” into a whole thing, she’s apparently become its little black dress.
Hey! Know who else loves little black dresses? Deadpool. Sounds like a perfect excuse for a mashup—a Gwenpool mashup, that is.
Marvel has officially announced that Gwenpool will be its next major character mashup. Gwen, who first took over Wade Wilson’s mantle in a variant cover earlier this year for Secret Secret Wars, will take over the role as a backup character in in three issues of Howard the Duck starting in November.
A month later, she’ll get her own short series, starting with Gwenpool Special #1. The issue will roll out with a slew of guests, including writers Gerry Duggan, Charles Soule, and Christopher Hastings; and artists Ron Lim, Danilo Beyruth, Langdon Foss, Robbie Rodriguez; and Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano, who make up the Japanese art team of Gurihiru.
Fan reactions to the announcement have varied from open enthusiasm to loathing.
Gwenpool: How to take a valid concept such as Spider-Gwen and shit on its credibility by turning the Alternate Gwen concept into a gimmick.
But other fans were more optimistic, noting the girl-centric nature of the Gwenpool series, and the character’s fitting the recent trend in practical clothing for female superheroes. Others lamented that Ladypool had yet to get her own comic despite having been around longer.
From the summary of her Howard the Duck appearance and the new series from Marvel:
A stranger in a strange land, she’ll enlist the aid of someone who knows a thing or two about being from an alternate universe – Howard the Duck! Now birds of a feather, the Marvelous Mallard is about to show Gwenpool the ins and outs of her new home – the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe!
Then, tis the season in December’s GWENPOOL SPECIAL #1 – as the biggest creators and biggest heroes from across the Marvel Universe band together for holiday cheer! She-Hulk throws a party and invites the entire Marvel U! Deadpool and both Hawkeyes – Kate & Clint – team up to take down a holiday pickpocket! Ms. Marvel battles her most dangerous threat yet: the holiday blues! And of course, the woman of the hour, Gwenpool herself! Featuring Gerry Duggan, Charles Soule, Christopher Hastings, Danilo Beyruth, Langdon Foss, Gurihiru and more – this is one you won’t want to miss!
Are you excited for Gwenpool? Or just tired of the recent tendency to insert her into things without rhyme or reason?
