Over the course of the final season, Game of Thrones fans had a good laugh over a coffee cup accidentally appearing in a shot. It turns out that the show’s directors and cinematographers may have missed something slightly larger in the latter half of the season. Observant fans noticed that shots of the bloody King’s Landing battle are missing the mountains that can be seen in previous seasons.
In a post to Game of Thrones fan subreddit, Reddit user “BelgianVictim” laid out these two screenshots. The first is from season 6, episode 10, where Cersei uses the wildfire barrels beneath King’s Landing to blow the Sept (along with Margaery Tyrell and others) to kingdom come. In the aftermath, the Sept and its surrounding can be seen smoking, with mountains rising into the horizon off at the far edge of King’s Landing. In the second shot, from season 8, episode 5’s battle sequences, you can see the mountains have mysteriously vanished, and Dany’s forces appear to have arrived at King’s Landing via flatlands outside the city’s border.

Both shots are seemingly from Cersei’s point-of-view, atop her room in the Red Keep, so it’s definitely the same horizon (or lack thereof) that we’re looking at. In season 8, that’s ostensibly where we see what remains of Dany’s forces laying siege to the city while Drogon burns everything in site.
“The Hound killed all the Mountains,” commented Reddit user SubjectDelta10.
