After completing reshoots for Avengers 4 this fall, Chris Evans will officially be done making Marvel movies.

In a profile in the New York Times, Evans confirmed he has no plans to return to the MCU. Like most of the lead Marvel actors, he initially signed up for a six-movie contract. Avengers 4 extended his contract to finish Captain America’s character arc, but after that, it’s over.

While other cast members like Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. expressed interest in continuing their roles, Evans often hinted that he’d leave once his contract was up. His next job is a distinctly un-Captain-America-like theater role, playing a “narcissistic creep” in the Broadway play Lobby Hero.

“You want to get off the train before they push you off,” he told the Times.

Fans were already speculating about the future of the Captain America franchise, with Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie both saying they’d like to take over. (They also suggested a Bucky/Falcon team-up movie, so don’t get too worried about a rivalry.)

This also fuels rumors about Steve Rogers dying in Avengers 4. Marvel Studios has hinted at major character deaths in the third and fourth Avengers movies, and a heroic death would put a definitive end to Evans’ role in the franchise.
