A Bank of Scotland ATM in Glasgow dispensed double doses of money last Saturday.
It’s not known which lucky Glaswegian first made the discovery or exactly how others in the area learned about the windfall glitch. But hundreds of people soon formed a line (or queue, if you’re British) that stretched around the block, waiting for their turn to double their money.
A passerby photographed the line and posted the picture to Twitter. Meanwhile, local police couldn’t help but notice the hundreds of people in line for that one particular bank machine, and investigate. Another passerby, Lauren from South Lanarkshire, Scotland, tweeted an observation just before the local lunch hour:
“The bank of Scotland at burnside was giving out double money now police are standing there so no one can go to it #gutting”
By the time the BBC and other British news media reported the glitch, it was over. Police had already notified bank officials, who remotely switched off the machine.
Bank spokesmen initially told the BBC that they would “contact any customers who have been affected.” But later that evening, according to the Daily Record, the company said, “It will be difficult to trace the cash because not everyone who used the machine will be our customers. So it’s unlikely that any further action will be taken.”
